Prologue: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote his first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887. This true story involves an independent deal Sir Doyle made with Holmes and Dr. Watson. A literary pact with the devil, so to speak. Sir Doyle would make Sherlock Holmes the most famous detective in all of England. Dr. Watson would be cheered on as his able and loyal friend. Sir Doyle stipulated that all their adventures together were written down by Dr. Watson and sent to him for stories to be published under Sir Doyle’s name. “Win-win,” Sir Doyle was reputed to say to the two men.

The great detective Sherlock Holmes’ outburst pierced the air with loathing for the renowned author. He paced around his flat at 221B Baker Street, London, England. His friend, Dr John H Watson, Holmes’ devoted associate and confidant, sat abruptly in the nearest chair trying to get out of Holmes’ way as he bounded around the dining table and headed straight at him.
